Gardening and Growing

Tending to the land and growing your own vegetables, herbs and plants is a richly rewarding experience that not only nourishes us but teaches us about the intimate processes of growth, decay, life and death.

Annual Allotment Gardening Calendar (2020)

This project was born of a desire to create a simple guide to sowing, planting and harvesting British vegetables and herbs all year round. When I first adopted my allotment I was somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information online and in books. What I really wanted to know was when to do what. As a visual person, I learn best from visual guides. However, the ones I came across seemed, to me, unnecessarily complicated and I sought a simpler, illustrative guide that condensed the essentials for me to discover the rest myself. And so, the 'Annual Allotment Gardening Calendar' was born!

Companion Planting Herbs (2021)

I am always looking for ways to get the most out of my allotment and how I can best support the soil and growth of any plants, which is exactly what 'companion planting' offers. Choosing plant pairings can discourage pests, attract beneficial insects, enhance flavour, or complement growing and soil conditions. What I like about companion planting is how accessible, economical and environmental it is. When I started looking into companion planting, I often came across contradictory information that required cross referencing, so I wanted to produce an illustration with verifiable suggestions for herbs and vegetables. The first of this series is focused on herbs, more coming soon!
