RICETANKS I & II

Project type

Durational performance and installation

Date

2011-2013

Materials

White rice, black rice, glass

‘RICETANKS I & II’ is a durational performance work exploring the practice and process of counting one million grains of rice.

The work was developed in two stages; a month spent counting 200,000 grains of rice (100,000 grains of white rice and 100,000 grains of black rice) and the following year spent counting 1,000,000 grains of rice (500,000 grains of white rice and 500,000 grains of black rice).

‘RICETANKS I & II’ was first exhibited at Contexture (Fish Factory, Falmouth) in 2012. The final 10,000 grains of rice were counted as a durational performance at the exhibition private view, which took over three hours. The rice tanks were exhibited again, a year later, at LINES (Strand Gallery, London), where the final 10,000 grains were counted to mark the completion of the work.
